Sailing and dinghy racing: wind, spray and a full day on the water

Why sailing is an underestimated ultraviolet environment: long duration, surface reflection, wind that hides heat, and spray that removes the film without you noticing.

The short answer

Sailing combines the longest durations in watersport with a wind that removes the sensation of heat. Crews routinely spend an entire day on a reflective surface without feeling hot, and the felt cue that normally prompts people to seek shade never arrives. Spray and sheet handling remove protection from the hands and forearms continuously. The underside of the chin and the nose are exposed from below by surface reflection, and are almost never applied to.

Sailing is the sport where people are most often surprised by their own sunburn, and the reason is meteorological rather than dermatological. Wind removes the sensation of heat. The skin is being cooled continuously by moving air and by evaporating spray, so the warning signal that normally makes a person reach for shade never fires. Meanwhile the sun is doing exactly what it would do to anyone lying still on a beach, for longer, over a reflective surface, with no shade anywhere.

This is the closest thing to a systematic failure in the whole category, and it is not a formulation problem. It is a perception problem, and it needs a strategy built on the clock rather than on how the skin feels.

The conditions, set out plainly

Protection strategy
Long sleeves and a peaked cap with a neck flap, because the duration defeats any reapplication schedule. Film reserved for the face, the ears, the underside of the chin and the backs of the hands, reapplied at every natural pause.

Why wind is the hazard

The thermal cue people rely on is skin temperature, and skin temperature on a windy boat is low. On a fast reach in twenty knots, a crew can be genuinely cold while accumulating a substantial ultraviolet dose. There is no relationship between the two. Ultraviolet is not heat and does not feel like anything until several hours after the damage is done, which is the fundamental reason sunburn happens to sensible adults.

The corollary is that on a sailing day the only reliable instrument is the forecast. The Met Office publishes a UV index forecast for the UK, and the World Health Organization's index bands are the standard way of reading it. Look at it before you launch, and use it to set your reapplication interval, because you will not get another signal all day.

Hands, forearms and the underside of the chin

Sheets, halyards, tiller extensions and hiking straps all abrade the hands and forearms constantly. This is the highest friction environment on the body outside surfing, and it is applied to less often than almost anywhere else. The backs of the hands take direct sun for the entire day.

The underside of the chin and the underside of the nose are the sailing specific sites. On open water, ultraviolet arrives from below by reflection off the surface, and it reaches skin that is shaded from the sky. Almost nobody applies sun protection to the underside of their own chin. The boat park is part of the exposure. Rigging, launching, recovery and packing away add hours at each end of the day, on land, usually with no shade and no wind chill to suppress the sensation of heat. Count them.

The strategy for a full day

Accept that reapplication alone will not cover nine hours

It is theoretically possible to reapply enough times across a race day to maintain protection. In practice, between races, on a wet boat, with cold hands, it does not happen. Design around that. Textile is the load bearing element

Long sleeved technical tops are standard sailing kit already, which makes this the easiest discipline in which to solve most of the problem with clothing. A peaked cap with a neck flap covers the ears and the back of the neck, which are the two sites a cap alone leaves exposed. Sunglasses with a proper standard behind them matter here more than in most sports, because glare off water is constant and squinting for nine hours is its own problem. Reapply at the natural pauses

Between races. During a tow. While waiting for a start sequence. Ashore between sessions. Attaching the habit to an event that already happens is the only version that survives a race day.

Count the boat park

Rigging in the morning and derigging in the evening are exposure, and evening exposure in high summer is not negligible. It is also the period when the wind drops and people finally feel warm, which is precisely when they stop bothering.

What it certifies

Nothing in itself. "Sport" is a marketing descriptor, not a regulated term with a defined test behind it. Where a product carrying it also carries a water resistant or very water resistant claim, that claim has a published procedure behind it and can be relied on for what it certifies.

What it does not

It does not certify sweat resistance, rub resistance, longer wear or better adhesion, because there is no standardised sport test that a claim of this kind must pass in the UK or EU. If the word is the only thing distinguishing two packs, it is telling you about positioning rather than performance.

The wider point is that a great deal of the language on a sports oriented pack is unregulated descriptive marketing sitting alongside two or three claims that are genuinely substantiated. What is not verifiable

We cannot tell you how much protection you have left after four hours on the water, and neither can anyone else, because the loss depends on spray, wind, handling and the quantity you applied. There is no instrument on a boat that measures it. What is verifiable is what the pack legally certifies, what the forecast said, and whether you reapplied. Those three things are enough to build a routine on.

After a season

Sailing careers are long and cumulative exposure adds up quietly, particularly on the hands, the forearms, the nose and the ears. Questions

Why do I burn sailing when I do not feel hot?

Because wind and evaporating spray keep skin temperature low, and skin temperature is the cue people use to decide they are getting too much sun. Ultraviolet is not heat. The cue and the hazard are unrelated, which is why sailing produces so much unexpected sunburn.

Does a spray top protect me?

A spray top covers what it covers, and it does so completely and reliably for as long as you wear it. That makes it a better protective measure than any film for those areas. The exposed sites are the hands, the face, the ears and the neck above the collar.

How often should I reapply on a race day?

More often than you will. The practical answer is to attach reapplication to events that already happen: between races, during a tow, ashore at lunch. A schedule based on the clock alone tends not to survive a busy day on the water.

Is the word sport on a pack meaningful?

Not on its own. There is no standardised sport test that a UK or EU claim of that kind must pass. Look instead for the water resistance claim, which does have a published procedure behind it.

Do I need to protect the underside of my chin?

On open water it is worth doing. Ultraviolet reflected off the surface reaches skin that is shaded from the sky, and the underside of the chin and the nose are the two sites where sailors notice it.
