Cycling is the discipline where the removal mechanism is not water at all. It is sweat, and specifically it is the wiping that sweat provokes. A rider whose sun protection has run into their eyes will wipe their forehead, and that wipe removes the film from the single most exposed part of the face. Then it happens again twenty minutes later, and again, for five hours.
The second feature of cycling is posture. A swimmer rotates. A walker changes direction. A road cyclist holds one orientation, on the hoods or on the drops, for hours, presenting the same forearms, the same neck and the same thighs to the sky the entire time. Exposure is not just long, it is concentrated on a fixed set of surfaces.
The conditions, set out plainly

- Two to six hours, often departing early and finishing in the strongest part of the day.

- The forehead, immediately and repeatedly, because it is wiped. Then the forearms and the back of the neck.
- Protection strategy
- Sleeves rather than film on the arms, a cap under the helmet or a rear flap for the neck, film reserved for the face, ears and the backs of the hands, and reapplication at the cafe stop, which is the only stop that reliably happens.
Sweat is not water
It is tempting to treat sweat resistance and water resistance as the same problem. They are not. Immersion removes a film by dissolution and by flow across the surface. Sweat is produced continuously from beneath the film, lifting it from below, carrying it downhill, and pooling at edges: the eyebrows, the temples, the jaw. The film does not vanish, it migrates, which is worse than vanishing because it produces coverage that looks intact and is not.
This is why the standards position is different. Water resistance rests on a published immersion procedure. Sweat resistance does not have an equivalent single public procedure in the UK and EU, and the claim, where it is made, sits under the general requirement that cosmetic claims must be supported by adequate evidence. Where cyclists actually burn
- The forearms, in a band that ends exactly where the jersey sleeve ends. The line is the evidence.
- The back of the neck, exposed by the riding position and by the gap between helmet and collar.
- The backs of the hands, in the shape of the glove, with the exposed area sitting on the wrist and the back of the hand above the cuff.
- The tops of the thighs, on a long ride in bib shorts, presented flat to the sky for hours.
- The ears, which sit outside the helmet and outside almost everyone's application routine.
- The lips, which are windburnt and sunburnt at once and which almost nobody protects. Our note on eye and lip protection covers why.

The removal mechanism here is sweat and wiping rather than immersion. Mechanism only, no measured retention is implied.
The helmet is not a hat
A vented helmet is a grid, and the scalp underneath it receives ultraviolet through every vent. Riders with thinning hair or a shaved head get a distinctive dappled pattern of sunburn on the crown, which is a reliable indication that the helmet was doing nothing protective. A thin cycling cap under the helmet solves this completely, costs almost nothing, and also gives a peak that shades the face. The strategy
Sleeves rather than film on the arms
Lightweight sun sleeves and long sleeved summer jerseys exist because they work. They cover the forearms completely, they do not migrate, they do not need reapplying, and in many designs they are cooler than bare skin in strong sun because of evaporative effect. Film reserved for face, ears, neck and hands

Choose a formulation that does not run
We name and rate nothing. What we can describe is the property that matters here: resistance to migration under continuous sweat. Formulations designed for this behave differently on the face and are usually described as high adherence, sport or face specific. Whether a given one works for you is something only you can determine, on a training ride rather than on the day of an event.

In the UK and EU this is not a claim with a single mandated public test method behind it in the way water resistance is. Where a manufacturer makes it, they are required under the common criteria for cosmetic claims to hold evidence supporting it, so it is not meaningless, but the evidence is not standardised across the market and is not visible to you at the shelf.
What it does not
It does not mean the product resists being wiped, and wiping is what cyclists do. It is not interchangeable with water resistant, which does have a published immersion procedure behind it. Two products both described as sweat resistant may have been assessed in entirely different ways.
What is not verifiable
There is no way to know from the pack how a formulation behaves under continuous heavy sweating, because that is not what the substantiated claim covers. There is no published figure we would trust for how much protection remains on a cyclist's forehead after two hours. We do not publish one. Test it on yourself, on a hard ride, and notice whether it runs into your eyes, because that is the practical failure mode and you can observe it directly.
Riders and cumulative exposure
Cycling produces a lot of hours in the sun over a lifetime, and the distribution is unusual: forearms, neck, hands.
