Kayaking and paddleboarding: sitting on a reflector with your arms in the air

Why paddlesports produce an unusual exposure pattern: reflected UV from below, the undersides of the arms, wet hands and no shade for hours.

The short answer

Paddlesports put a person low over a reflective surface, in one posture, with the arms raised and rotating for hours. The result is an unusual exposure pattern: the tops of the thighs, the tops of the feet, the undersides of the forearms and the underside of the chin all receive ultraviolet that they would not receive on land. Hands are wet continuously, and the paddle shaft abrades the film off them within the first half hour.

Paddlesports are quietly one of the most demanding sun protection environments in Britain, and they are almost never discussed as one. A sea kayaker or a paddleboarder spends the whole day low over water, with nothing above them, in a posture that presents an unusual set of surfaces to the sky and an even more unusual set to the reflected light coming back up off the water.

The conditions, set out plainly

The exposure pattern is upside down

On land, the sun reaches the tops of things. On water, it reaches the tops of things and then bounces back to reach the undersides. For a paddler, that means:

  • The underside of the chin and the jaw, which are shaded from the sky and lit from the surface.
  • The undersides of the forearms, which rotate upwards on every stroke and are presented to the water on the recovery.
  • The inside of the upper arms, for the same reason.
  • The underside of the nose, which people only think about on snow.

Add to that the sites that take the direct dose in a seated or standing paddling posture: the tops of the thighs, the tops of the knees, the tops of the feet, the backs of the hands and the back of the neck. The paddle shaft

A paddle shaft is wet, it turns in the hand, and it is gripped for the entire session. There is no formulation that stays on the palm side, and not much that stays on the back of the hand where the shaft rolls across it. Hands are effectively unprotected within the first half hour of a paddle unless they are covered.

Paddling gloves and pogies solve the problem for the hands. For the backs of the wrists, which sit just outside a glove cuff and just inside a cag sleeve, the answer is a deliberate application and a habit of checking. This is the same wrist band problem that appears in cycling and in outdoor work.

The tops of the feet are the signature paddlesport burn. On a board or in a sit on top kayak they point straight at the sun for hours, they are wet, and they are almost never applied to. Anyone who has done a long paddle in sandals knows exactly what this looks like.

The strategy

Cover the legs on a long day

The tops of the thighs are the largest continuously exposed surface on a seated paddler, and they are flat to the sky. Long shorts or leggings remove the problem completely and stay cool when wet.

Do the feet

Every time. It is the most reliably neglected site in the sport and the one that produces the most memorable burns.

Brimmed hat with a retainer

A peak alone leaves the ears and neck exposed, and on water a hat without a retainer lasts until the first gust. A brim plus a chin cord is the practical answer.

Eyewear with a retainer too

Glare off water is constant and the eye is an exposed organ. Our note on eyes and lips sets out the standard that sunglasses are tested against.

Use the lunch stop

Paddlers almost always land somewhere. That is the reapplication event. Do not treat a beach as shade, because dry sand reflects ultraviolet too.

What the label will and will not tell you

What it certifies

That the product achieved a sun protection factor in the range that carries this label under UK and EU rules, determined by a published in vivo test method in which a specified quantity of product is applied to a measured area of skin. The number relates to protection against the ultraviolet that causes reddening, principally ultraviolet B.

What it does not

It does not describe ultraviolet A protection, which is indicated separately by the UVA in a circle mark. It does not translate into a number of hours you can stay out. And it describes performance at the tested application quantity, which is far more product than almost anyone applies.

The most common misreading in the whole category is treating the sun protection factor as a duration. It is not. It is a ratio determined under a published test method at a specified application quantity, and it says nothing about hours. Cold water, cold hands and the practical problem

In British conditions, a paddler coming off the water has cold, wet hands and is standing next to a boat in a car park. That is the least likely moment in the day for a reapplication to happen, and it is precisely the moment before a walk back, a shuttle drive or a long pack away in the sun. A product that opens with one cold hand, kept in a deck bag rather than in the car, is worth more than any formulation advantage.

What is not verifiable

Nobody can tell you how much ultraviolet you receive from below on a given day, because it depends on the surface state, the sun angle and the water clarity. We publish no reflectance figure of our own and rely entirely on what the World Health Organization describes. What is in your control is coverage of the undersides, which most people never attempt.

After a paddling season

The pattern to watch is the pattern the sport creates: hands, forearms, the tops of the feet, the back of the neck, the underside of the chin. The NHS publishes sun safety guidance, and anything changing on your skin over weeks is a GP conversation rather than a website one.

Questions

Why do the tops of my feet burn when I paddle?

Because on a board or a sit on top they are presented flat to the sky for hours, they are wet, and they are almost never applied to. It is the most characteristic paddlesport burn there is.

Do I really need to protect the underside of my chin?

Over water it is worth doing. Ultraviolet reflected off the surface reaches skin that is shaded from the sky, which is why paddlers and sailors burn in places that make no sense on land.

Can I keep sunscreen on my hands while paddling?

Realistically no. A wet shaft turning in the grip removes it within the first half hour. Gloves or pogies are the practical answer, with a deliberate application to the wrists.

Is a beach lunch stop a rest from the sun?

No. Dry sand reflects ultraviolet, there is usually no shade, and people take layers off. Treat it as a reapplication point rather than a break.

Does SPF 30 mean I get thirty times longer in the sun?

No. The sun protection factor is a ratio determined under a published test method at a specified application quantity, not a multiplier of time. Treating it as hours is the single most common misreading of a sunscreen label.
