Sun protection on a long run: why sweat rate defeats most formulations, the sites runners burn, and how to build reapplication into a route.

The short answer

Running produces the highest sustained sweat rate of any common outdoor activity, and sweat lifts a sun protection film from underneath rather than washing it off from above. The film migrates into the eyes, the runner wipes, and the forehead is stripped. On a long trail run the shoulders, the back of the neck, the forearms and the backs of the calves take a concentrated dose in one posture for hours, and there is nowhere to carry a reapplication unless you plan for it.

Running is the sweat problem in its purest form. There is no water to blame, no board rubbing anything, no wetsuit. There is simply a very high sweat rate, sustained for a long time, on a body holding one orientation.

The interesting thing about sweat is what it does to a film. Immersion removes protection from above, by dissolution and flow. Sweat is generated beneath the film, so it lifts and floats it, carrying it along the natural drainage lines of the face: the brow to the temple, the temple to the jaw, the bridge of the nose to the cheek. The result is not uniform thinning. It is channels of no protection between ridges of protection, and to the eye it looks like the sunscreen is still there.

The conditions, set out plainly

What fails first
The forehead first, within the first hour, then the neck under the cap band and the shoulders under vest straps.
Protection strategy
A cap with a peak and ideally a neck flap, a light long sleeved top on exposed routes, film reserved for the face, ears, neck and hands, and a small reapplication carried in the vest and used at a defined point on the route.

Wiping is the failure

When a film reaches the eyes it stings, and every runner responds the same way: a forearm or a hand across the forehead. That single motion removes the film from the most exposed part of the face and transfers it to a sleeve. Then it happens again. By the end of a long run, a runner may have wiped their forehead twenty times.

Two things reduce it. A peaked cap intercepts sweat before it reaches the eyes and shades the forehead at the same time, which is a rare case of one item solving two problems. And a formulation designed for high sweat rates behaves differently. We name and rate nothing, so the practical test is your own: if it is in your eyes within thirty minutes, it is not the right one for you, whatever the pack says.

Runners have the fewest natural stopping points of any group in this guide. That makes the pre planned reapplication point, at a turnaround, an aid station or a known water fountain, the difference between a strategy and a hope.

Where runners burn

  • The forehead and temples, from wiping.
  • The back of the neck, from the running posture and the gap between a cap and a collar.
  • The ears, which are permanently exposed and rarely applied to.
  • The shoulders and upper back, in vest or singlet, with pack strap abrasion on top.
  • The backs of the calves on trail runs, which take a surprising amount of sun and never occur to anyone.
  • The lips, particularly at altitude or in wind.

The strategy

Plan the reapplication into the route

A turnaround point, an aid station, a shop, a known fountain. Runners do not stop spontaneously, so the stop has to be part of the plan. Our note on reapplication as the dominant variable makes the general case.

Wear the cap

Peak for the face, flap or buff for the neck and ears if the route is exposed. On a hot day the evaporative cooling from a wet cap is a performance benefit as well.

Sleeves on exposed routes

Light long sleeved running tops are common and effective. Textile does not migrate under sweat, which is its entire advantage in this discipline. See UPF clothing.

Time the run where you can

Training runs can move. Races cannot. If you are racing through the middle of the day, plan protection accordingly rather than assuming a morning routine will carry.

Races are the hard case

Marathons, ultras and trail races start early and often finish in the strongest part of the day, which means the runners with the longest exposure are the ones moving slowest and stopping least. Sun protection at an aid station is a small item to carry and almost nobody does. If you have a drop bag, put one in it.

There is a second issue in long races: a runner who is depleted and hot makes worse decisions about protection than one who is fresh. This is another argument for putting the strategy into kit rather than into judgement.

What the label will and will not tell you

Non greasy, sweat proof

What it certifies

Two different things. "Non greasy" is a sensory description with no regulated meaning at all. "Sweat proof" is a stronger claim than "sweat resistant" and implies complete resistance, which is the class of absolute claim that UK and EU guidance on sunscreen labelling advises against, in the same family as "waterproof".

What it does not

Neither describes a published test procedure you can look up. Neither tells you how the formulation behaves at a high sustained sweat rate over hours, and neither addresses wiping, which is the actual failure mode in running.

The general rule is that absolute claims should make you suspicious and procedural claims should not. "Water resistant" points at a published immersion procedure. "Sweat proof" points at nothing you can inspect. Our standards note on water, sweat and rub resistance separates them properly.

The easiest win in the sport

Almost all training runs can move, and running early is better for heat, for traffic, for air quality and for ultraviolet at the same time. It is the one control in this file that costs nothing, requires no kit and cannot be applied incorrectly. Our note on shade and timing makes the general case.

What is not verifiable

There is no published figure for how much protection survives ninety minutes at a high sweat rate, because it depends on the formulation, the individual, the temperature and the humidity. We will not invent one and we would not trust one we saw. Judge it by whether it runs into your eyes, and by whether you reapplied.

After the run

Runners take a lot of cumulative exposure over years, mostly on the face, neck, shoulders and arms. The NHS's sun safety guidance is the general reference. Anything on your skin that is changing over weeks belongs with a GP, and we give no diagnostic guidance here.

Questions

Why does sunscreen always end up in my eyes when I run?

Because sweat is generated under the film and carries it along the drainage lines of the face. A peaked cap intercepts much of it, and formulations designed for high sweat rates migrate less. The reliable test is your own experience on a hard run.

Do I need sun protection for a 45 minute run?

On a high UV index day, on an exposed route, at the wrong time of day, it is worth it. For an early morning or evening run in the UK, the dose is small. Use the forecast rather than a rule.

Are running sleeves worth it?

For the covered area they are more reliable than any film, because they do not migrate. Many are also cooler than bare skin in strong sun because of evaporative effect.

What about the backs of my calves on a trail run?

They take more sun than people expect on a long day out, and they are almost never applied to. Worth a deliberate pass on a big mountain or desert route.

Should I reapply during a marathon?

If you can, at an aid station or from a drop bag. The runners with the longest exposure are the ones finishing in the hottest part of the day, and a single morning application does not cover that.
